Blended foods
- For the first 6 weeks after gastric band surgery only blended foods may be eaten
- Chew well and carefully, and remove hard pieces from your mouth if you notice them
- Eat slowly and heed any feeling of "fullness"; there is no need to "eat up"!
- Usually an amount of food equivalent to 3 tablespoons is sufficient to "feel satiated"
- Drink in sips; do not drink with your meals, drink up until 15 minutes before your meal and again at least 1 – 2 hours afterwards.
- Take multivitamin and mineral supplements on a daily basis e.g.: Combivit of Migros
- Ensure sufficient protein intake: Low-fat milk products, varieties of meat, fish, egg, tofu
- Do not use "Slimming meals"; they contain bulk materials
- Practical suggestions for preparing blended foods
- Use a mixer, blender or meat grinder with fine blades or glass rasp.
- Cook in advance and store prepared and blended foods in your freezer
- If there are small portions leftover prepare thick soups out of them
- You may use infant food preparations containing meats, vegetables and fruit
Especially suitable foods and drinks / all foods need to be blended!
Drinks
Low-fat milk, Vita-Milch (German brand), buttermilk natural or light, whey, low-fat yoghurt drinks, Slimline drinks
- Plan on having _ litres of low-fat milk drinks or buttermilk
- Low-fat milk drinks contain valuable proteins and calcium
Combivit, diverse types of teas, mineral water, watered down fruit and vegetable juices, light drinks, coffee
- Drink sufficiently in little sips; at least 2 litres per day
Breads and porridges
Whole-grain or sandwich bread made from finely ground flour without the crust mixed as a porridge, corn porridge, zwieback porridge, oatmeal, rice pudding, mixed cereals
- Prepare porridges and mixed oats with low-fat milk
Meats / poultry / fish
All kinds of thinly grained meats like ground-meat, sliced meats, cutlets, ham. Chops should be prepared utilising fat reducing preparation methods and blended with low-fat gravy or broth. Boneless fish lightly fried or steamed; pudding-like mixture of ham, pork chops, tuna or smoked fish.
Sauces
Low-fat gravy, tomato sauce, white sauces using low-fat milk, cheese sauces using low-fat milk and cheese.
Eggs / Tofu
Blended cooked egg dishes or tofu with vegetables or potatoes. Eggs poached in broth.
Low-fat milk products
Low-fat milk, vita-milk, buttermilk, whey, low-fat yoghurt, light pudding, whole cheese and spreads, cottage cheese (chew carefully), low-fat curd cheese, ground cheese
- Make sure to use low-fat milk products
Starchy meal side dishes
Bread without crust blended with low-fat milk or broth, mashed potatoes freshly made or instant products, rice cooked to a very soft consistency and blended, finely ground polenta, grits
Vegetables
All kinds of fresh and frozen vegetables cooked until tender and blended
- If possible eat vegetables for lunch and dinner
- If possible avoid substituting with vegetable juice
Fruit
Fruit mush, blended compotes, pressed fruit from the glass rasp
- If possible avoid substituting with fruit juice
Soups
Made from grits, blended oat bran, flour, blended vegetable or potato soup
- Enrich soups with eggs, low fat cheese spread, grits, mashed potatoes, and vegetables and blend
- One soup should replace one full meal
